Steps To Take To Prepare For A Speaking Engagement

Whether you speak at a Tradesource Mixer or are a speaker or coach, you are called upon to get up in front of a group and “be engaging.” Are there any steps a speaker can take to calm the nerves –whether you’re a featured speaker or merely standing up to give your 30-second elevator speech? Preparation and planning are typically crucial although you don’t want to be so scripted that you sound stiff and lifeless.

Here are a few steps you can take to prepare for your networking or speaking engagements:

  • Know your subject. If you have a tagline for your business, use that in the speech. If you’re only giving an elevator speech share a “pain point” and then mention how you can help. If you’re speaking to a larger crowd as a keynote, make certain you speak on a subject that you’re comfortable with.
  • Know the audience and tailor your message. Every speech should be tailored to the audience you’re in front of, regardless of whether you’re a keynote or giving your elevator speech.
  • Make the topic relevant is the best way to connect with your audience.
  • Check your speech to make certain your facts and figures are accurate, of course, but practice your speech prior to the event.
  • Save time for questions and answers.
